There is no software without bugs, right? While this is a common sentiment, we make assumptions that rely on the premise that software has no bugs in our day-to-day digital life. We trust identity providers (IDPs) to get authentication right, operating systems to perfectly comply with their specs, and financial transactions to always perform as intended. Even more vividly, we trust software with our physical safety by going on planes, driving a car that actively corrects our adherence to traffic lanes, or undergoing certain surgeries. What makes this possible? Or to put it another way, why aren’t planes falling out of the sky due to bad software?
