Bethesda, MD, October 10, 2018 – SANS Institute, the global leader in cyber security training, today announced the agenda for SANS Cyber Defense Initiative® 2018(#SANSCDI) taking place December 11-18 in Washington, D.C. The training features more than 40 courses and 10 bonus evening talks covering today’s most complex cyber security issues. Included among the talks is a discussion by Dr. Johannes Ullrich (@johullrich), Director of the SANS Internet Storm Center (ISC) entitled The New Internet (and it has nothing to do with IPv6 or PiedPiper).
According to Dr. Ullrich, “User privacy has become a focus of recent internet standard developments. For example TLS 1.3 will make it more difficult to intercept network traffic, or to figure out which sites users are visiting. Recent improvements to DNS, like the ability to transmit DNS requests and responses over TLS, will close another gap currently exposing which websites users are visiting. But all these improvements will make it also more difficult for enterprise networks to legitimately monitor user behavior and to detect abuse and criminal actions.
“Security practitioners need to learn about these standards and how to protect their networks while still allowing users to take advantage of the improved privacy. At the same time, these standards are exposing users to new risks by creating new chokepoints for user traffic that could be used to intercept it or to disrupt connectivity. Join me at SANS Cyber Defense Initiative to learn more about these new protocols and how they will affect web application security, network monitoring and intrusion detection.”
In addition to his evening talk, Dr. Ullrich will also teach the SEC503: Intrusion Detection In-Depth course. This course expands upon his evening talk, providing security professionals with the core knowledge, tools, and techniques necessary to defend their networks with insight and awareness.
SANS Cyber Defense Initiative 2018 features courses for security professionals at every level. Included among the course line-up are several new courses covering such topics as SIEM, OSINT gathering and analysis, defensible security architecture, purple team tactics and more.
